Deane and Norm's Motorcycle Trip to Labrador

June 27 - Charleston, SC

The first attraction we went to  in Charleston was to catch a tour boat out to Fort Sumpter.  Of course our main interest here was to see the fort where the Civil War started.  It was interesting, being built in the middle of the Charleston harbor after the end of the War of 1812, and having been all but reduced to rubble during the civil war, but now partially restored to pre-civil war state.

Charleston also has a large naval ship museum.  There is an aircraft carrier  with navy planes, a destroyer, a submarine, and a Coast Guard ship.  We toured the submarine first, a diesel- electric one built at the end of World War II.  Then the Coast Guard ship, and finally spent a lot of time on the aircraft carrier.  It was the "Yorktown", launched in 1945 and named after the Yorktown that was sunk in the war in the Pacific.  It served for thirty or more years, with updates of course.  It also had many airplanes, some of World War II vintage, some of Korean War vintage, some of Viet Nam War vintage, and a couple later than that.

The weather here at this time of the year is not the greatest for touring, being very hot and very, very humid.  We about got worn out in the heat and humidity.

However, we made a come back after a rest in the air conditioned motel, and spent early evening in the city of Charleston itself.  In particular, we walked along the seawall to the bay and admired the Southern style big beautiful homes.  We weren't sure whether some were of pre-civil war vintage, but most were later.  However, they had multi-stories and the columns of the antebellum style.

While up in the Asheville area, we talked to another motorcycle rider, from Florida, and he said that if we were in the Charleston area to admire antebellum homes, we also ought to take in the ones in Savanna. So, tomorrow, we're going to ride to Savanna, GA, and look at those.  It's only another 100 miles or so.  (As we said, we have a few days to just wander on the bikes.)
