Deane and Norm's Motorcycle Trip to Labrador | ![]() |
|
August 1 - Manhattan, Kansas area |
| Today was a rest day, with a little visiting
and a motorcycle club meeting.
I took my niece Elizabeth (Del's daughter) and Del out to lunch. Elizabeth has just graduated from high school, and is all excited about going to college at Kansas State University, in Manhattan. And she's busy this summer with a good job, so she's having a good time. She's been one of my favorite nieces, and sharing her excitement was fun. Del is a motorcyclist also, and has a Gold Wing too. He has been a member and mainstay for many years of a motorcycle club called the "Blue Valley Riders", in Manhattan. This club is very successful as an all-bike club, and has members with many brands and sizes of motorcycles. It is one of the friendliest clubs I've known, and they always make me feel welcome. I get to see many of the members when I go through Manhattan every couple of years, plus I see some of them at the various national motorcycle rallies, so they are kind of like my extended motorcycling family. As it turned out, the Blue Valley Riders were having a meeting on this evening, and invited me to talk on my ride to Labrador. So, I made up some maps to show where Norm and I had gone, and shared some of the things we'd done, some of the riding conditions we faced, and some things maybe they would like to know (like conditions for motorcycles on ferries). As I said, they are a fun group, and were quite interested. During the day I had to get a little repair job done on my sunglasses. One of the ear pieces had broken, and riding a motorcycle in bright sun without sunglasses is a real problem. I took them to a local optometrist shop, and they not only put on a temporary ear piece, they did it for free! A little more cleanup on my Gold Wing was about the only other activity for the day. |
