Deane and Norm's Motorcycle Trip to Labrador

Saturday, June 16 - Albuquerque, NM to Clarendon, TX         425 Miles

Today was a big day for Rick, Bob and Deane - the start of the big journey.  Anticipating a hot day in New Mexico and Texas, we started early.

Going East from Albuquerque, and then heading South and East from Clines Corner to Vaughn, the plains and the juniper scenery were extra green, because of New Mexico having had more spring rains than usual.  This brought out more Pronghorn  Antelope than usual, and they are always fun to try to spot.  When we crossed into Texas, things got dryer.  As we went into Texas on Highway 60, we ran the gamut of huge stockyards for cattle feeding - thousands of cattle.

We ran parallel to the BNSF (Burlington Northern - Santa Fe) train's main line, and saw many trains going back and forth.  It was fun to be reminded that Train Engineers like motorcyclists.  As we wave to them, they like to blow the whistle back.  I guess they are just "Bigger Boys with Bigger Toys".

The highlight of the day was touring Palo Duro Canyon.  Rick and Bob had been there before, but Deane hadn't.  It was a beautiful day, and we rode down into this huge and beautiful canyon.  It was hot, 95o on the top of the Canyon, and 98o in the bottom, but it was dry, so not too bad.

We spent the night in Clarendon, TX (near Amarillo), and then will be off to ride across Oklahoma and into Arkansas.
