Deane & Norm's Motorcycle Trip in

Northern & Eastern Europe and Scandinavia

July 2, Stockholm, Sweden

Today we just played tourist, in getting on one of the local tour buses which lets you get on and off when you want.  The weather was good, although a little cool, and we rode in the open upper deck of the bus.  We got some excellent views of this fascinating city from that vantage point.

Here are some photos of various buildings.

Another one.

Our main attraction was the museum about the Swedish ship "Vasa" which sunk in the harbor while heading out from its christening ceremony in 1638.  This ship lay in the silt and sand of the harbor for 333 years until found and lifted in 1971, and then restored.

This ship was remarkably preserved, and has now had a museum built around it, with many artifacts showing what life was like in the mid-1600's.

We found a perfect carved map of Northern Europe and Scandinavia, for the symbol of our trip.

Some restored pieces of the ship, in a model of the stern of the sailing ship, with many brightly decorated carved figures (larger than life) - as it really was in its time.

Here are full-size copies of the carvings on the ship's stern above.

All in all, Stockholm is a very nice city to visit, and is worthy of a longer stay, but we are "on our way"!
