Deane & Jack's Motorcycle Trip in

Australia and New Zealand

April 12 - Mackay to Rockhampton, Queensland

346 (208 Miles)

This was an easy day, partly to make up for the long day yesterday, and partly because it completed our pre-planned itinerary.

We rode through more sugar cane fields, about 50 miles of it, and that ended about 450-500 miles of intensive farming of the sugar cane.  One thing I wonder - What do they do with the left-over cane when they have squeezed out the sugar and the liquid?  We never saw any big piles of this type of plant matter.  Its a mystery to me.

After that 50 miles of sugar cane, that type of farming ended.  We then came into more heavy grass and scattered trees - somewhat like the Outback.  Then it changed character again and was very open grassland, and then relatively dry rolling ground of grass and trees.  All of these were bounded by mountains, one side between these areas and the ocean, and the other side another range of mountains - all very pretty.

One item of interest was a sugar refinery, and we believe they called it a sugar distillery.  Apparently the sugar processing plants that reduce the cane to nearly the sugar stage feed this plant that does the refinement and packaging.

Most of our trip was along the sea, but not very close.  We did swing out to find the sea at an inlet, and then went on.

Arriving at our motel early allowed us to do a final laundry day, with clean clothes to last us through our flights home.  If it sounds like our day wasn't too exciting, it is true!!!!

We had intentionally left two days open at the end of our planned itinerary, so that if we fell behind in our schedule we could use those days to fill in.  However, our planned itinerary went exactly as planned, with no trouble or delays, so we now have to work on what to do for two days. - We'll see.
